Obituary of Eddy F. Callens

Eddy F. Callens, CEC, CCE, age 71 of Honeoye Falls, at home May 14, 2011 after a long battle with brain cancer. Eddy was born the son of Fernand and Gerardine Beckers Callens on January 12, 1940 in Dendermonde, Belgium. Eddy was 36 years at Monroe Community College as a Professor in the Food, Hotel, Travel and Tourism. He shared his talents with the community teaching thousands of students. In 2008, Monroe Community College honored Eddy with Professor Emeritus. Eddy was a Certified Executive Chef and a Certified Chef Educator. In 1993 he was awarded Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation. He was also a handyman and gardener. Eddy served the Belgium Army from 1959 to 1961 and the United States Army from 1962 to 1965. He is survived by is loving wife, Laurie; his children, Mary-Ann (Robert) Rolfe, Eddy (Julie) Callens; bonus daughters, Rebecca and Alyssa Block; grandsons, Justin Rolfe and Austin Callens; granddaughters, Hannah Rolfe and Caroline Callens. Here in the US, he is also survived by a sister, Nelly (Patrick) O'Connor; sister in law, Anita Callens; niece Rita; nephews, Paul, Robert, Mike (Lisa), Christopher and Damien (Monica). In Belgium he is survived by his siblings, Ulric (Leona) Callens, Marie-Marthe Callens, Herman (Lucienne) Callens and Lily (Roger) VanAcoleyen. Many grand nieces and nephews. Eddy was predeceased by his parents and 2 brothers, Hubert and Peter. There will be no prior calling. Services will be held at Spiritus Christi Church, 121 Fitzhugh Street, Rochester on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11 am. The family requests donations to be made to the Monroe County Community College Foundation to establish the Eddy Callens Memorial Scholarship.
