Obituary of John E Giering

John E. Giering, Ph.D. of West Bloomfield, died February 27, 2016 at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, the Reverend Robert I. Giering and Mabel Buss Giering. He is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Leslie (Quick) and his children, Alison Romano (Joseph McKeon), Jane (John) De Haan and Robert (Theresa) Giering. Grandchildren; Emily (Matt) Fouty, Lucy and Anna De Haan and Will and Jake Giering. Also survived by his sister Mary Jane (Ferree) LeFevre and honorary son Michael Philipson. John was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on February 8, 1929. He graduated from Nazareth, PA High School and from Moravian College. He received his Ph.D. degree in Endocrinology/Physiology from Purdue University in 1955. John spent his career in research pharmacology. He worked for Astra Pharmaceutical Company in Worcester, Massachusetts for approximately ten years. In 1966, he joined Strasenburgh Laboratories which became Pennwalt Corporation. He held various positions there including Director of Licensing and Medical Director. He retired in 1986. John was an active citizen of the Town of West Bloomfield and served as the Chairman of the first Zoning Board of Appeals beginning in 1970. He very much enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. Friends may call Friday, March 11, 2016 from 4-7 pm at the Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, Inc. 59 Monroe Street, Honeoye Falls. Funeral Services Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the West Bloomfield Congregational Church at 1 pm. The family will receive friends following the service at church.
