Memories continued: Patrick age 15. Both Ethan and Patrick enjoy working with wood. For my graduation from nursing school Ethan gave me a beautiful pen and pencil set he made from wood turned on the lathe in their basement. When Patrick was a sophomore he started making cutting boards in shop class. As soon as I saw one of them I immediately commissioned him to make one for me (yes commissioned...Patrick was always motivated by the green back!). The cutting board he made me is gorgeous. Per my request, he made it as large as he could, about 15x20 inches. It's heavy duty, and made of beautiful hardwoods so it will last for generations. I happily rewrite the text message I sent to Patrick last Dec...'Just in case I haven't said so recently...I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my cutting board!!!'. And I always will.

Memory #6: Patrick circa age 10. More hiking. This time the challenge was High Tor in Naples...not for sissy's, not Hiking 101. High Tor is a wildlife management area that includes a rocky gorge full of impressively high walls and beautiful waterfalls, and is larglely impassable until late summer when water levels recede. This time it was not Patrick needing assistance, but Aunt Laurie. My 45+ year old knees were not happy hikers, and spending hours in and out of cold water didn't help. Patrick, et al (brothers, cousins and uncles) climbed like mountain goats. At one point a couple of them climbed ahead to secure a rope that assisted the lesser goats (me) climb a difficult section so we could continue climbing together. It was probably this kind of hiking that prompted me to explore alternate ways to entertain and spend time with my adventure seeking nephews. Necessity being the mother of invention, my aging knees led us to start camping.

Memory # 6: Patrick age 8, third grade, learning geography. Patrick had a project - make a map of Mexico and research common facts about the country. I had already helped John and Ethan make their third grade maps, now it was Patrick's turn. We made the map festive by layering bits of tissue paper (paper mache style) to his outlined map, using different colors for each state. Of course, glue and tissue paper covered both of us and every other kitchen surface by the time we were finished, but the end product was awesome. When it came time for Patrick to make his presentation, I went to school with him and helped him serve Mexican style food to his class. As I recall, the kids loved the cheese quesadillas and the chips with fresh salsa, but they were not fond of the 'green stuff' (guacamole). After Patrick's map presentation and food tasting, we all went outside and had fun with a piñata. All in all, a successful introduction to the Mexican culture for Patrick and his third grade class.

Patrick was the young man I would have loved to have had for a son. He was so kind, funny, and loved his family and friends. A very good young man, well rounded and a great spirit. I will miss you always Patrick. My Sunday's will never be the same, ever. It was my pleasure and honor to know you and become your friend. You touched so many in your life and all will have a great memory to carry with them for the rest of their life.

Memory #5: Patrick age 5. New York City. Trains, subways, buses, taxis, horse drawn carriages and lots of walking and waiting in lines. Grand Central Station, St Patrick's Cathedral, the top of the Empire State Building, a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty, a ride on the Wall St. bull, elevators to the top of the Twin Towers (yes, he was there!), FAO Schwartz, lunch at Carnegie Deli, Central Park, walking the decks of the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier,... It was the morning of our departure and at breakfast Terry, Cathy and I were reviewing a map to figure out how to get around some road construction en-route to Howe Caverns. Patrick looked up and casually says "Do we have to ride a train or a bus to get to this place?" From a young age it was obvious that Patrick preferred private modes of transportation...

Memory #4: Patrick age 4. A family summer holiday at Chaffey's Locks on the Rideau Canal in Ontario, Canada. Patrick discovered fishing. Boy, did he love fishing. Someone (Terry? Uncle Rick?) figured out that sunfish like canned corn and we started using corn kernels for bait. Patrick would no sooner hang a baited hook over the water and a sunfish would practically jump on the hook. He loved it! He caught dozens of them everyday. All the fish were kept in a large Rubber Maid tote filled with water until there was hardly room for those fish to swim. Patrick wouldn't let anyone release 'his' fish, so at night after he went to sleep we would dump them back into the canal. The next morning we would explain that the fishes all went back to their mommy's and daddy's. Each morning Patrick would open his eyes, realize where he was, and say "Can we go fishing?" So, so cute.

Memory #3: Hiking, hiking, hiking. Getting wet and muddy was half the fun. One especially memorable trip to a gorge in Springwater follows. Patrick was probably three or four years old. At a wide spot in the water, too far for Patrick to leap on his own, John picked him up piggy back style and did the leaping for him. After making a perfect landing on the other side, John stopped suddenly, bending over at the waist to keep his balance. Patrick slid right over John's head, landing face first on the ground. It was very funny to those of us still on our feet. Patrick didn't think so until later, after figuring out he had bragging rights to a great adventure story. He recovered from the humiliation and continued his love of hiking and all things outdoors.

Memory #2: Overnights at Oxford and Park, my apartment at The Roosevelt. Eating junk food and staying up late. In general, breaking all the rules. Walking to the planetarium (Patrick knew the way at age 3!) or to Tivoli's (in his footed pajamas) for ice cream before bed. So young and so brave, especially with one of his big brothers at his side.

To Cathy, Terry, John and Ethan, How to loose a child, a brother? My heart is broken for all of us. To Patrick, Memories of you will mend my heart and there you will be, forever the bond to make me whole again, someday. And may memories of you do the same for Mom and Dad, and John and Ethan. Love and peace dear one. xxL.

I am sorry to hear of your most devastating loss. May your memories of Patrick bring you comfort and may the words of our Lord bring you hope. At Luke 7:12-16, Jesus demonstrated what the resurrection would mean for young men. When this resurrection takes place, imagine how overjoyed you could be when you are reunited with Patrick again. May this thought bring relief to your grieving hearts.

Patrick was the kind of child any parent would be proud of. He was loving, caring, thoughtful, funny, impish, responsible, helpful and oh so lovable. Our lives will never be the same without him, but I consider myself fortunate to have known and loved him for his few short years with us. He will live on forever in my heart.

Cathy and terry,
Weekend sleep overs, zip lines and roseland water park. Patrick was full of life and fun. The loss of Patrick is a huge void in everyone's life. A true evaluation of life is the quality of years, rather than the quantity. The happiness and love Patrick gave to family and friends far overshadows the brevity of his life. Patrick will never be forgotten. We will all see you someday Patrick.
Sincerly,
Phillip,Joanne,Nathan,Amanda,James and of course Sam.
