Obituary of Martha J. Leas
Martha Leas, M.D, died in her home on Monday 5 July. She had battled esophageal cancer during the
past year. Martha was born in 1931 and raised in Shaker Heights, Ohio by Roscoe Leas and Mary Corlett
Leas, together with her older sister Marianne (deceased). Martha graduated from Carlton College, and
Western Reserve Medical School, and went on to do her residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital
in Chapel Hill, and a Fellowship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. She served as a Public Health
Services physician in the Peace Corps from 1963-1969, where she lived and worked in India, Thailand,
and Tonga. Upon her return to the United States she was physician to the State Department in
Community Group Health in Washington D.C. In 1973, Martha came to the Rochester area where she
joined Genesee Health Service and later, Rochester General, where she practiced Internal Medicine until
her retirement last August. Martha is survived by Larry Wolfe (nephew), Sandy Wolfe (niece), and
Anthony Wolfe (brother-in-law and husband of Marianne Leas Wolfe). Martha's special concerns were
The Nature Conservancy, the Metropolitan Opera, and Lollipop Farm, and thoughtful contributions might be sent there. There will be no funeral services beyond observances by the immediate family.
