Obituary of James M. Hughes

JAMES MORRELL HUGHES (JIM)

 RUSH NY

Jim passed on Saturday  August 24, 2024 at  Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY after a long life of skillful work, kindness, generosity, gratitude and humility. He was 91 years and 8 months old .

He was preceded in death by his parents George and Marjorie Hughes of Irondequoit and Lima NY, and his three older brothers, George Jr., Robert and Richard. He is survived by his younger sister, Barbara Hughes Brundage of Burnt Hills, NY,  Shirley Hughes, his beloved wife of 68 years survives him as do their four children, LeeAnn (Mike Parker), Cyndy (Bruce Powell), Russell (Maria) and Robin (Jim Taylor). Three grandchildren, Ian (Susan), Katie, Aaron and the grand dog, Tucker. His special sister-in-law , Julie Chans and many nieces and nephews.

Jim graduated from Irondequoit High in1951 and Alfred University Tech in 1953. He served our country in the US Army in Korea. Jim retired from the RG&E in 1994 after 38 years in the line construction department . His construction skills led him to Habitat for Humanity to build houses. Mission trips with the Rush Church to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Jim delivered Meals on Wheels. He helped out at the Rush-Henrietta Food Pantry and Cameron Ministries.

His excellent craftsmanship could be seen in the pottery he made, the fine woodworking he did, and the renovations he made on his kids houses. Jim loved spending time outdoors in the beauty of nature during all seasons. Sailing, skiing, camping, hiking mountains, flying kites on the beach, walking with the dog on the Lehigh Trail and traveling around America especially by train. Jim will be remembered as a thoughtful gentle man who would give anyone a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on when times got tough.

A friend recently said "You meet Jim once and love him forever." He will be missed.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024 @11:30 at the Rush United Methodist Church, 6200 Rush- Lima Road, Rush NY. A luncheon to follow.
