I feel that it was an honor to meet and know Dick for several years. In my opinion he was a great man, and though missed, will continue to be with us through his charity and his photographs.
Sincerely,
Chris Gaylo

This photo was taken the last time I saw Dick, at a HF fundraiser for Borgne, at a ice cream store. We had a great time, talking, laughing, joking, same as every other time I saw him. I still have a couple rolls of film I bought from him, stored in my freezer. He was certainly an unforgettable character.

To Joan and your beautiful family . . . I just learned of Didk's passing and my heart is broken. Dick was a wonderful friend to me, always helpful, caring and loving. He gave the best hugs - and when he smiled, his entire countenance beamed! He was a giant of a man and a faithful friend. In my heart, I will cherish all the times spent in your home with the two of you, whether it be a Project HOPE meeting, a New Year's Eve party, or just a holiday get-together with friends in common. And one of my fondest memories of Dick was our wonderful trip to Borgne, Haiti - a truly life-changing experience for all of us! I will miss him so much. I loved him. And I am so blessed to have known him and could call you both my friends.
I love you, Joan. My heart goes out to you. Hold onto all the joy that this dear man brought into your life. Your separation will be but a brief moment in time - for you will be reunited with the love of your life one day - and your joy will be overflowing. Until then, I am sending my heartfelt condolences to you long distance, wishing that today I could wrap you in a warm hug in person!

Dick was a “Menschenkenner,” a person who knew how people ticked. He understood the strengths and weaknesses of those he met, and he responded with care and compassion. Joan shares these qualities and I see them in his children. Deepest condolences to Joan, Anne, John, David, Kate, and Caroline.

I’m so glad we had the opportunity to sit with Dick, Joan and Tom Rees, share a glass of lemonade and tell stories. Dick was sharp and fun. It will be our lasting memory of an incredibly giving, kind and generous man who loved our Joanie. Rest in peace.

For Dick
He died
stories emerge
from family dueling stories
from different points of view
from friends never heard stories
of times past with few observers.
We tell
to remember
to preserve
to grieve
to ward of forgetfulness.
Each memory makes today
these friends
these family members
more precious
to those who remember him.
Keep telling his stories!

Such an amazing man! He and Joan led me on a path for several years, and I cherish our times with book club. The village is less with Dick gone, yet his memory and example lives on. Thanks, Dick, for everything.

I was privileged to be Dick’s home health aide for three years. He was one of the kindest, most patient, generous and thoughtful men I’ve ever known. I appreciated his dry sense of humor and the wise advice and insights he shared. Dick lived and loved for his God and his family and there was plenty leftover for many others as well. He will be greatly missed. Lots of love and prayers for Joan and then family during this time of loss.

A gracious host, I'll always remember when I joined Dick and Joan for lunch one day. Dick offered a beautiful prayer from the Daily Office that he read with such careful inflection and appropriate emotion. I was touched that he had prepared something for our time together and that he was so familiar with the Daily Office. I suspect those prayers he loved are with him still.

A friend, a neighbor and a mentor Dick was the patriarch of the incredible family that welcomed Diane and I to the Village of Honeoye Falls 43 years ago. More than friends and neighbors but truly family in the very best sense of the world. Dick had the stature, civility, faith and dignity so rare in today's world. To say he will be missed would be an understatement beyond words. Our deep and heartfelt condolences.
